about us

The "Pursuing A Dream Foundation" was born in August of 2002 by Dave Owen and his wife Jane. The purpose of this foundation is to help fund events such as the Charity Shootout, as well as other programs to make it possible for the disabled to experience outdoor activities such as sport shooting, hunting and fishing.

The "Wheelin' Sportsmen" program was founded by Kirk Thomas after a tragic accident left him without the use of his legs. The changes that resulted gave Kirk a renewed approach to life. He has dedicated himself to help people enjoy the outdoors, regardless of their limitations or disabilities. In 2000, his actions caught the attention of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and Wheelin' Sportsmen became an official program of the NWTF. In August of 2002, his actions caught the attention of Dave and Jane Owen and Pursuing A Dream Foundation was created to help support this worthwhile organization. In addition to supporting Wheelin' Sportsmen, another goal of the foundation is to make the shooting facilities and the clubhouse at Caledonia Sportsmen's Club handicap accessible.

  • The total money raised to date for the Wheelin' Sportsmen program and other programs is in excess of $68,500.00 in cash, goods, and services.
  • The Foundation has funded a number of projects at the Caledonia Gun Club to make the facilities and the grounds more handicap accessible.
  • We have sponsored (3) fishing trips and (6) hunting trips for various disabled persons.
  • We have financially supported the Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding which provides riding lessons and opportunities for the handicapped and disabled.
  • Last November, a group of 4 of us went to Mississippi for the Wheelin' Sportsmen Ultimate Team-Up. 64 disabled came for a 3-day hunt at Sedgefield Plantation. It was our job to help prepare food and take the disabled person out hunting every morning and evening. For some of the disabled, it was the very first time they had ever been in the woods or shot a deer. What an experience for all of us to have enjoyed.

These are all great things that could not have been possible without your support of the Pursuing A Dream Foundation, but there is so much more that we can do. If you have any suggestions for other areas of need, please let us know as we continue to grow.
